Last Saturday I was sketching near Sengkang Floating Wetland, it’s our family’s weekend routine going to Sengkang west riverside park for a short outing. We have the waterway nearby home, it’s a very relaxing place with Riverside park, floating wetland and we would frequently spot monitor lizards, otters and many birds. Long ago, I started my painting hobby here, trying to sketch the greenery along the waterway. This place has inspired me and I have many paintings of the riverside, this is the latest addition in my collection!

My artist friend Alvin Mark Tan was exploring about the history of Nutmeg trees in Indonesia & Singapore and when I told him about a few Nutmeg trees along Sengkang Park Connector, he wanted to visit the place.

I joined him and we sketched the beautiful lush green trees along the waterway. Here’s my painting looking at the waterway from the park connector. I’m waiting to watch his video about this session on Alvin’s YT channel!

]]> We had our online kids holiday workshop last week on creating a texture Landscape. Student’s made a texture base in the first session of the workshop and the base needed to dry overnight. So we had a second session on the next day to plan on the landscape designs. I gave them some examples of abstract silhouette designs and they chose their pattern from the list, also being creative to add some interesting details!

Students had more texture base to work on another landscape too! Look at the wonderful texture and the beautiful blend of colours here!!

My Online Class for kids Art this week was creating a Galaxy Artwork using the textures and patterns that we created using a special technique. As opposed to my concerns about getting the patterns without my personal presence, kids just went through the whole process effectively. We created the patterns twice on separate sheets, to make sure there are enough base in case the first attempt didn’t make-through. But to my surprise, they got beautiful prints on both attempts!

The last step was of course cutting out the planets and creating their own Galaxies! See what they got! Natural textures resembling real planets!! It always makes me proud to watch their giggles and smiles, when they explain what they have created & how they enjoyed the session!!

I was a little skeptical about conducting classes online thinking that kids need personal help for various reasons, including the different materials that they have to buy themselves (previously I was providing the materials). I have many requests for personal classes and still I think it is very stressful for parents with all the safe distancing measures in place, so I decided to start with online platform like Zoom for now. It was fine and I hope to continue with this set-up for sometime before resuming with full personal lessons. Kids enjoyed a crafty workshop today to keep themselves occupied during these holidays!!

]]> Advanced Deepavali wishes to everyone!

Star Anise geometry design for National Museum of Sg Rangoli

This year’s theme for Deepavali celebration at National Museum of Singapore is ‘Spices’ and I had a request that I use the Spices from National Museum’s William Farquhar collection of paintings. I suggested to use the spices for the decoration and incorporated the natural Geometric Shape of the spice ‘Star Anise’ into the design and this was well received as this fits into the overall theme as well.

Though I was a little sceptical about myself giving a talk about ‘Rangoli & it’s significance’ live on facebook from the museum, I pushed myself as always. I’m glad the talk went on well, thankfully my co-hosts Mehak from India and Michelle from Croatia were very interested in the art and that helped me to discuss about some of the facts about Rangoli in a very casual way throughout 1 hour. later Michelle stayed with me until the end of the programme, interacting with the kids and parents who came to try their hands on the rangoli.

I’m very happy to learn that National Museum of Singapore received positive feedback about the program and they have decided to keep the Rangoli for 1 week until deepavali, for the visitors. I’m thankful to the programme Co-ordiantor from National Museum of Sg, the camera crew, Marinah, my co-hosts, visitors whom I met last Saturday and all others who appreciate my work!

]]> Here are the studies together, all done with the same set of hues – Lemon yellow, cad red, Quinacridone rose, Pthalo blue, Burnt sienna, raw umber + Permanent white. Though I wanted to try variations in
1.saturation levels,
2.value patterns,
they all ended up with same value pattern and still need to work on getting a control in saturation of greens. But these studies helped me with other aspects like rendering and edge control!
Any inputs?

]]> I’m glad that my digital interpretation of artist Chua Mia Tee’s “Portable Cinema, 1977” has been selected for the Gallery Light Up to be projected on National Gallery Singapore’s Canopy from today until August 30th!! That’s my effort “Today’s Portable Cinema”, reflecting how our way of entertainment life has changed drastically over the past 50 years! I’m waiting to see the light up in person, pls do visit (following safety guidelines)!! The Gallery’s canopy light up is along Padang road from 7pm -12am daily!!Thank you and Congrats to Hwee Lee, her artwork is selected too!! Thank you fellow ‘Zoom sketch’ friends for the support!!

Last week I went to sketch “The Church of Epiphany” at Seletar, only to find it has been recently demolished to build a new 4-storey Church. Instead found that the nearby place was the former Royal Air Force Station and sketched the colonial houses of the camp. I had sketched the old Church of Epiphany back in 2014 in Oil paint, my kids were very young then!

On-location sketching of Bishan park landscape in gouache the next day, while walking across the stream and playing with water. We saw a heron occassionally feeding on the fish in the stream. It was a nice panoramic view from the other side.

SCHMINCKE Akademie Gouache paints are now available in town and I tried using them in my outdoor sketch and a small studio painting. I tested them on 300gsm Cold Pressed Watercolour paper. I selected Indian Yellow, Carmine, Ultramarine, Turquoise, Sap Green and Burnt Sienna.


The pigments are bright and fresh, when mixed with white they give beautiful tints. However the tints vary from semi-transparent to opaque depending on the binder to pigment ratio. That makes me to use more pigment for a good coverage. I felt the paint is more towards the acrylic side and is more suitable for layering washes and glazing.
The paints retained their buttery consistency and didn’t dry up even after 10 days when kept inside an air-tight contianer. Most of the pigments have been marked as high lightfast rating. There are 30 colours available in this Akdemie series including Gold and Silver colours, brilliant for illustrations and mixed media art. The paints come in 60ml tubes with a good variety of colours. The quality of the paint is good considering the price is much cheaper for more quantity.

Reflecting back on the sketching trip and I have lots going in my mind. A big thank you for the organisers of Asia-link Sketchwalk, USKSG family n my family 
I always hoped to attend these events and finally made it this time. I’m glad that I manged on my own throughout (my family joined me later, they had their own plans and let me have my time to attend the happenings). Usually I would like to keep things to myself , but this time I pulled myself out of my circle and made many new friends. Realised that I couldn’t sketch away just like I would do in Singapore or India and I needed time to settle down, but did fairly well in sketching, I hope. Need to rethink about keeping the tools light and quick sketching ways!!
In total, I came out of my comfort zone in little good ways, already am looking forward for the next sketching event!!

]]> We “Captured the mood in Gouache” during Saturday’s workshop. The participants were very keen to learn and appreciative of the medium. A memorable and learning experience for me as an instructor as I learnt to keep track of the time, lesson plan, my 45 mins demo and attending to the queries of the participants. Strangely, I forgot to bring my palette(but had pictures to show how my palette looks) and water container, thanks Jenny and Favian for helping me with supplies. I had the wonderful Meg HLeng to assist me. Thanks for all the participants, I’m glad to have contributed in someway for your urbansketching journey!

Missed #1week100people2019 challenge yesterday, so catching up during morning walk today. Each study took about 1 minute, I felt I have trouble with capturing gesture and proportions of ppl in action. Today I could sketch much faster. Also tried the minimalist outdoor sketching kit inspired by @bucciblog Marco Bucci. Made my version with an A5 size file case, it is lightweight and hope it helps me to do quick sketches. Done on #theperfectsketchbook using watercolors + white gouache

August Sketchwalk at Kampong Java Park, behind KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital. I have special memories about this place during my both pregnancies. The Centre for TransCultural Studies of Temasek Polytechnic presents the exhibition “We Draw Amaravati Together” by Urban Sketchers Singapore.
This project is presented by the Amaravati Partnership Office of the Ministry of Trade & Industry and Temasek Polytechnic, with Urban Sketchers Singapore.

The show runs 17 April to 20 June 2018; 9:00 am to 5:30 pm, Monday–Friday; it will be closed on public holidays.
We will also have open weekends on the first and third Saturdays of each month, during the run of the show; the dates are 21 April; 5 & 19 May; 2 & 16 Jun, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.

]]> Here are some sketches I did last week, when we were in Borocay, Philippines for school holidays. This is the first time where I managed to squeeze in some comfort sketching time for myself when kids n hubby were busy playing. It’s not always easy to sit and sketch in a new place where we do have a lot of things to see and enjoy, especially with kids. All these sketches took around an hour and I still fondly remember the gusty wind (my first sketch has the place’s white sand caught on the paint), clear water and how I rushed to capture the sunset hues.  Hope to record new places in paint in future trips too.
