Last Saturday I was sketching near Sengkang Floating Wetland, it’s our family’s weekend routine going to Sengkang west riverside park for a short outing. We have the waterway nearby home, it’s a very relaxing place with Riverside park, floating wetland and we would frequently spot monitor lizards, otters and many birds. Long ago, I started my painting hobby here, trying to sketch the greenery along the waterway. This place has inspired me and I have many paintings of the riverside, this is the latest addition in my collection!

Me with Alvin exploring Nutmeg trees at Sengkang Park connector!

My artist friend Alvin Mark Tan was exploring about the history of Nutmeg trees in Indonesia & Singapore and when I told him about a few Nutmeg trees along Sengkang Park Connector, he wanted to visit the place.

I joined him and we sketched the beautiful lush green trees along the waterway. Here’s my painting looking at the waterway from the park connector. I’m waiting to watch his video about this session on Alvin’s YT channel!

I was a little skeptical about conducting classes online thinking that kids need personal help for various reasons, including the different materials that they have to buy themselves (previously I was providing the materials). I have many requests for personal classes and still I think it is very stressful for parents with all the safe distancing measures in place, so I decided to start with online platform like Zoom for now. It was fine and I hope to continue with this set-up for sometime before resuming with full personal lessons. Kids enjoyed a crafty workshop today to keep themselves occupied during these holidays!!

Advanced Deepavali wishes to everyone!

Star Anise geometry design for National Museum of Sg Rangoli

This year’s theme for Deepavali celebration at National Museum of Singapore is ‘Spices’ and I had a request that I use the Spices from National Museum’s William Farquhar collection of paintings. I suggested to use the spices for the decoration and incorporated the natural Geometric Shape of the spice ‘Star Anise’ into the design and this was well received as this fits into the overall theme as well.

Though I was a little sceptical about myself giving a talk about ‘Rangoli & it’s significance’ live on facebook from the museum, I pushed myself as always. I’m glad the talk went on well, thankfully my co-hosts Mehak from India and Michelle from Croatia were very interested in the art and that helped me to discuss about some of the facts about Rangoli in a very casual way throughout 1 hour. later Michelle stayed with me until the end of the programme, interacting with the kids and parents who came to try their hands on the rangoli.

I’m very happy to learn that National Museum of Singapore received positive feedback about the program and they have decided to keep the Rangoli for 1 week until deepavali, for the visitors. I’m thankful to the programme Co-ordiantor from National Museum of Sg, the camera crew, Marinah, my co-hosts, visitors whom I met last Saturday and all others who appreciate my work!

Last week I went to sketch “The Church of Epiphany” at Seletar, only to find it has been recently demolished to build a new 4-storey Church. Instead found that the nearby place was the former Royal Air Force Station and sketched the colonial houses of the camp. I had sketched the old Church of Epiphany back in 2014 in Oil paint, my kids were very young then!

On-location sketching of Bishan park landscape in gouache the next day, while walking across the stream and playing with water. We saw a heron occassionally feeding on the fish in the stream. It was a nice panoramic view from the other side.

SCHMINCKE Akademie Gouache paints are now available in town and I tried using them in my outdoor sketch and a small studio painting. I tested them on 300gsm Cold Pressed Watercolour paper. I selected Indian Yellow, Carmine, Ultramarine, Turquoise, Sap Green and Burnt Sienna.

The pigments are bright and fresh, when mixed with white they give beautiful tints. However the tints vary from semi-transparent to opaque depending on the binder to pigment ratio. That makes me to use more pigment for a good coverage. I felt the paint is more towards the acrylic side and is more suitable for layering washes and glazing.

The paints retained their buttery consistency and didn’t dry up even after 10 days when kept inside an air-tight contianer. Most of the pigments have been marked as high lightfast rating. There are 30 colours available in this Akdemie series including Gold and Silver colours, brilliant for illustrations and mixed media art. The paints come in 60ml tubes with a good variety of colours. The quality of the paint is good considering the price is much cheaper for more quantity.

We “Captured the mood in Gouache” during Saturday’s workshop. The participants were very keen to learn and appreciative of the medium. A memorable and learning experience for me as an instructor as I learnt to keep track of the time, lesson plan, my 45 mins demo and attending to the queries of the participants. Strangely, I forgot to bring my palette(but had pictures to show how my palette looks) and water container, thanks Jenny and Favian for helping me with supplies. I had the wonderful Meg HLeng to assist me. Thanks for all the participants, I’m glad to have contributed in someway for your urbansketching journey!

The Centre for TransCultural Studies of Temasek Polytechnic presents the exhibition “We Draw Amaravati Together” by Urban Sketchers Singapore.

This project is presented by the Amaravati Partnership Office of the Ministry of Trade & Industry and Temasek Polytechnic, with Urban Sketchers Singapore.

The show runs 17 April to 20 June 2018; 9:00 am to 5:30 pm, Monday–Friday; it will be closed on public holidays.

We will also have open weekends on the first and third Saturdays of each month, during the run of the show; the dates are 21 April; 5 & 19 May; 2 & 16 Jun, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.

Week 3- Assignment from Schoolism’s “Landscape Sketching in Watercolor and Gouache”

For 3rd week, Nathan allowed us to use pigments but limited to yellow ochre, venetian red, ultramarine blue, permanent sap green, and van dyke brown. I couldn’t find them here in Sg nor wanted to wait for them if I order online, so substituted with Yellow Ochre, Mars red, ultramarine Blue, Olive green and Raw Umber. These are the ones I could get here close to the suggested pigments. Definitely the end results vary, but a little try than nothing at all.

A Brahma shrine

Sketched this about a month ago. Interesting to see a Brahma Shrine in front of this house here, which is very commonly seen in Thailand (I learnt they also have other similar “Spirit houses” ). The four-faced idol, Brahma is widely known in India as the “God of creator”.

Opening of “USK 10X10 + ASEAN 50 + We Draw ASEAN Together” exhibition at GCV Temasek Polytechnic yesterday, many thanks for the entire team. I’m glad that two of my sketches were selected to be a part of the exhibition.
Exhibition runs till July 8.

Later in the afternoon, I attended artist Ch’ng Kiah Kiean’s “Sketching with Ink and twig” workshop, it was very interesting to make our own sketching tools and KK guided us with his 2 wonderful demos during outdoor sketching.

Looking forward for the ASEAN sketchwalk!!

New palette

I bought this small plastic palette with closed containers recently and found it extremely useful in keeping the Gouache paint wet for long period of time(for a week even without sponge). The only disadvantage is that it is hard to scoop up paint with brush size of 3/4 ” and above, however easy with smaller brush sizes.

The Sengkang Compass Point Mall had been closed for renovation for nearly a year and came back with a fresh look with a new name, Compass One. With more residents looking forward, the mall was re-opened in September 2016. Additional facilities are a wet playground for kids, Sengkang Public Library now occupying two levels, many new shops and eateries. The exterior design had a nautical themed design which I think has been down played in this look.

Sengkang west Zone D RC had arranged for a half-day leisure outing to St. John’s Island yesterday. Wonderfully organised by the team with games, competitions, gifts, lucky draw and snacks. I managed to sketch the activities while kids and hubby were enjoying the games

Foliage

“Foliage”, 6″ X 8″, Gouache on Saunders Waterford CP(NOT)…….done from a reference photo.

I have limited my colours on my palette to three plus white for all my sketches/paintings since last 5 years(almost form the start), as it happened to be an important advise from most of the artists who inspired. This makes us to work on the values first, extract more from the existing combination and a sense of harmony as a whole. The three colours would be a cool or warm version of each primary. My combination need not be a success every time but I learn a lot working like this.

Lemon yellow, Alizarin Crimson and Ultramarine blue with Permanent white for this little study.

Here’s a detail from a sketch (in progress) I did yesterday…..among the two traffic cones, one has a change in tone from light into shadow (showing convincing turning of form) and the other has a single tone throughout (can’t see form and structure), this is why I think tones are very important. Reason for sketching this again in Gouache is, the construction materials have arrived in the nearby vacant land and I’m pretty sure this view will be gone forever. I have planned to sketch the progress in construction stages from the same view, it may take 2-3 years, but I’ll try to document the slow changes as seen through my window. Let’s see how it goes!!

Portrait Commission

I did a portrait painting for Indhu recently, she wanted a 11′ X 16″ portrait of her mother…..after doing a tonal charcoal study and a colour study, I started the final draft. She is very happy about the outcome, I too felt satisfied that I didn’t copy the photo as such, I tried to interpret the colours differently. I didn’t want to loose the continuation, so completed in 2 episodes of 2 1/2 hours the same day.
Thank you Indhu for giving me this opportunity, somehow the finishing stages felt divine

After some episodes of migraines and vertigo, finally I could start sketching again. Ritu joined me for this month’s official sketchwalk in the charming, quiet Wessex Estate….he was thrilled to see roosters and hens in Singapore!! We went late and bad I couldn’t stay for show and tell session, looking forward for the next sketchwalk

The Door

It was very interesting to sketch this unused door in the material storage place…but my motto was to show convincing light and shadow across the patch of grass.As often said, it is important to have a clear objective to sketch or paint a scene in technical/artistic terms that you wish to capture on the 2D surface, it can be like an interesting shape, convincing light, colors in shadow, temperature difference, depth in distance/atmosphere, turning of form etc. rather than just liking the scene/subject.

Tried to capture the dappled light on the shed, however could have used saturated color in there. I used a limited palette of Cad yellow, cad Red and Prussian blue……always remind myself to use more paint, should be bold with the values…..lot of things to learn, that’s what keeps me going

Void deck

A typical void deck in Singapore apartments, an open space in ground floor with benches, bicycle parking racks and tables, some apartments even have small shops. This is the front pick-up/drop area of our apartment void deck. Often those who live in the ground floor have the option of setting up a nice mini-garden like this. I sketched this from the pedestrian walk, the only difficulty being the big red ants from the mango trees.

Started our drawing lessons with Dinosaur subjects – Brachiosaurus and Stegosaurus…….also learning how to add depth and volume with charcoal shading……..then came the interesting texturing lesson on getting realistic skin textures on the T-Rex…..very well received!!

Sengkang Park and Mushroom Cafe

We frequent Sengkang Riverside Park and Mushroom Cafe on Sunday afternoons and went last Sunday too. After lunch, kids and hubby headed to fly kites and I hopped from tree to tree to find a good shady spot for sketching. It was a nice windy day and my pigments were drying up fast. Spent about 1 1/2 hours sketching and this was the result,

I find Gouache becomes pale if I’m not very careful about the values, because it tends to lighten a bit after drying and a little white will kill the intensity of colours a lot (unlike oils where pigments retain considerable intensity after adding white). Did some corrections later at home.

Compass Point Mall, Sengkang – Before renovation

“Compass Point” mall in Sengkang is undergoing renovation currently and temporarily closed for about 1 year. People here miss the Public Library, Supermarket and other eateries. This is how it looks now, I always felt the architecture somehow resembles a cruise ship from the design of windows and layers. Realised how huge the mall is when I tried to sketch it from side view, however settled for this one, since other views are blocked by trees. Took 3 sessions of 1 hour each. Looking forward for the new look, I’ll sketch this again after the re-open.

Fire and an Ice dragon in chalk pastels!! It’s rather easy to blend colours with chalk pastels….though a very messy medium, chalk pastels are remarkable in portraying the glowing light on the lanterns and fire around the dragon.

Kids Art @myartsandcreatives 2015 – Oil pastel 2

Oil pastel lesson 1 is all about colours and blending….in contrast this lesson combines the technique as well, each student has to choose different colours for each layer and I made them test a small section prior going in with the final picture. This lesson is about scratching out patterns and marks over the layers of Oil pastels, so I drew a picture of Chameleon among the foliage and we studied the skin patterns and colours from many pictures.

Given the choice, some students chose to make the Chameleon blend in with the background, specifying it’s unique feature and some chose it to stand out from the background. It was a hardwork but definitely very therapeutic to scratch out the patterns, the kids got surprised at the final outcome since they didn’t expect the colour combinations to end up so well!!

HAPPY LUNAR NEW YEAR TO ALL MY FRIENDS!!

With Lunar New Year commencing next week, the official Sketchwalk for January was organised at Chinatown…..the place is festive with people and lots of goodies, me and ritu went to sketch the Mariamman temple.

The temple has a banner in front with wishes for the coming Lunar new year and was bustling with people of all races and religion. When we finished sketching and about to move, the Lion Dancers reached the temple and were ready to start their performance.

Anyway we had to move on to watch Woon Lam Ng’s watercolor demo. He stressed on to have a good, strong structure first before building up on the details over. We couldn’t stay for the Show and Tell, rushed back home.

Sengkang Hockey Stadium

Sengkang Hockey stadium is a part of Sengkang Sports and Recreation Centre, two important events have been held here in the past few years – Hockey tournament of 2010 Youth Olympic Games and SEA Games. I sketched this in two sessions, this was the result after 1 hour for the 1st day…

Morning walk and sketch

School holidays and I’m going walks with my kids around waterway……saw a couple of monitor lizards, Kingfishers and everyday I’m sketching 360 degree views from the same shady spot under the bridge….can’t go too far with kids and can’t spend more than 1 hour in sketch…..I find this an opportunity to learn sketching as many possible scenes around the same place. Waterway Watch Society – Sketch

Saw this little colorful cabin of “Waterway Watch Society” under the bridge near Punggol waterplay area, couldn’t help but do a gouache sketch instead of my usual monochromes.

We usually cycle there on weekends, kids would love to play in the huge sand box and then in water. I did the sketch when we were there on National Day. It was an overcast day. This cabin is to help public when the waterway is opened for water activities like kayaking, it is closed for now.

Privileged to be a part of the “Let’s Draw Singapore” a book relay project by Urbansketchers James, Lisa and Don. 61 contributors shared memories of their neighborhoods in the form of sketches, 3 sketch diaries traveled throughout Singapore and compiled together as one great souvenir…….the book launch was held on Saturday at URA centre. I was glad to be there, the sketch and story set up of each contributor was great!

The exhibition runs till 31st August from 9am – 5pm, do drop by to see Singapore through our sketches!!

“We Draw Singapore Together” exhibition jointly organised by Temasek Polytechnic and USKSG is officially open now, the exhibit runs till 12th August in Glocal Connect Village, Temask Polytechnic.

Displayed are sketches of many styles and different medium….. not to mention, the subjects showcase the culture and places of Singapore. My two charcoal sketches are alongside many talented artists’, I’m humbled and honored to be a part of this project. “We Draw Singapore Together” – May Sketchwalk at Marina Bay

“We Draw Singapore Together” workshop cum sketchwalk event was organised by Temasek Polytechnic and Urban Sketchers Singapore…..I attended the workshop about Sketching People and had the opportunity to learn under Don Low and James Tan, both are artists, illustrators and Urban Sketchers. They had previously prepared notes and pictures on many related topics…….very insightful. I’m going to sketch people more often.

On the second day of workshop, I went for the mass sketchwalk at Marina Bay…..Ritu too was sketching with me in the hot and humid weather. Here are our results for the day,

Sketched this in 3 sessions of 45 mins each, this Methodist Church is besides my HDB block….it has nursery and kindergarten classes, my son studied here for the past three years. This place will be very busy during the school ending hours and of course on Sundays.

I tried sketching with Gouache for the first time, though the effects are not similar to oil painting in anyway, it can be very easy to handle this medium outdoors……..may be I’ll use this to do plein air studies for my future studio oil paintings

A glimpse of me and my Rangoli in Pasir Ris-Punggol Town Council Newsletter (Issue 44 Jan-March 2015)……..I thoroughly enjoyed creating this “SG 50 & Pongal” themed Rangoli single handedly 2 hours non-stop, during the “Pongalo Pongal” event organised by Sengkang Iaec.

I still gladly remember how the kids got fascinated by seeing the multi-colourd Merlion and people seeking permission to take pictures of the work.

Thank you Pasir Ris-Punggol Town Council members and staff for the picture!

A Happy accident! I sketched my first session of St Anne’s Church on last Friday and kept my charcoal sketch on the table…..my 2 yr old little daughter has sprayed a fine mist of water with the spray bottle(we use it to water our tiny terrariums) and by the time I saw my sketch, it was dry to touch……and the resulting texture was so good, I completed my sketch preserving it.

My sketch of Sri Sivan Temple, Geylang East Avenue 2 for the February Sketchwalk with Urban Sketchers Singapore……………Charcoal on paper.

I had to rush home, so couldn’t wait for the “Show and tell session” but met fellow sketchers near the temple, hope there are more sketches of the temple. This is my first time visit to this temple, the architecture is a mix of North and South Indian styles, very interesting to sketch the intricacies.

Did this one today at Jalan Kayu, an old two storey house tucked in between other newly renovated houses, with interesting antique lamps, cracks on the walls and fresh colorful blossoms in balcony, I see this as a tie between past and present.

Saw this man near the waterway today morning, he is exercising with a heavy weight wooden ring, first started to swing around his waist and then towards upper body. The ring was very long, he would have done this around 100+ times before going near the water to yell a loud “o” and the sound was so big and vibrating.

Here is the plein air painting I did today, the sky is overcast, so the light is cool and no much sharp or crisp shadows.

This is how I carry my wet oil painting from location, I have a box A4 size file with a thick Styrofoam sheet attached one side, I paste my painting with tape at the sides on the Styrofoam and close the file, that’s it….can carry 2 canvas in one file by attaching second canvas on the other side cover.

These group of latest paintings are inspired by the theme “Go Green”, I’ve tried to capture the light on landscapes true to Singapore. The paintings are done with a limited palette of three primaries plus white. I used either warm/cool version of each.

Time and tide wait for none, but time here stands still for you to enjoy the lively. The tranquil water mesmerizes everyone, evokes a quiet mood to indulge within.

This painting is really after a long gap, however I used the time to learn from other artists. A scene from my neighborhood waterway, I’m striving to capture the essence of the place while still maintaining the color harmony, correct values and color temperature. There should be at least one improvement than every previous work for me to believe I’m in the correct phase of learning.

This is another painting showing a typical kampong house in Buangkok. This is the last surviving kampong in mainland Singapore, situated besides the Sungei Punggol. The kampong houses are a surprise amidst the urban high rise buidings. Wooden houses with metal roofs, rugged paths, overhead power lines, fences and many others are some rare sights which can only be seen in the kampong.

Herons and kingfishers are common to see along the riverbanks, hence the area is known to be one of the best bird-watching spots in Singapore. This view of Bukit Timah Railway Station is from a rugged sand path behind the station. Situated in a serene atmosphere, the Bukit Timah Railway Station is an endearing local landmark and a key building of Singapore’s railway history. The Bukit Timah Railway Station was opened as a part of the Singapore-Kranji Railway. Owned by the Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB), these railway tracks and train stations were properties of the Malaysian Government until June 30, 2011. Going there after the train service ceased, everyone including me had a nostalgic feel about the place. This must be the reason why I wanted to paint this place. Its conservation serves as a physical reminder of Singapore’s role as a transport hub in the region.
