Second day sketch in Bishan park with Schmincke Akademie Gouache, it started raining just when daughter and I found a good spot to sketch and set up things under a tree. We moved to a nearby shelter and I continued, trying to capture the dark, cold, rainy mood in my sketchbook.

Reflecting back on the sketching trip and I have lots going in my mind. A big thank you for the organisers of Asia-link Sketchwalk, USKSG family n my family

I always hoped to attend these events and finally made it this time. I’m glad that I manged on my own throughout (my family joined me later, they had their own plans and let me have my time to attend the happenings). Usually I would like to keep things to myself , but this time I pulled myself out of my circle and made many new friends. Realised that I couldn’t sketch away just like I would do in Singapore or India and I needed time to settle down, but did fairly well in sketching, I hope. Need to rethink about keeping the tools light and quick sketching ways!!

In total, I came out of my comfort zone in little good ways, already am looking forward for the next sketching event!!

The Centre for TransCultural Studies of Temasek Polytechnic presents the exhibition “We Draw Amaravati Together” by Urban Sketchers Singapore.

This project is presented by the Amaravati Partnership Office of the Ministry of Trade & Industry and Temasek Polytechnic, with Urban Sketchers Singapore.

The show runs 17 April to 20 June 2018; 9:00 am to 5:30 pm, Monday–Friday; it will be closed on public holidays.

We will also have open weekends on the first and third Saturdays of each month, during the run of the show; the dates are 21 April; 5 & 19 May; 2 & 16 Jun, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.

Here are some sketches I did last week, when we were in Borocay, Philippines for school holidays. This is the first time where I managed to squeeze in some comfort sketching time for myself when kids n hubby were busy playing. It’s not always easy to sit and sketch in a new place where we do have a lot of things to see and enjoy, especially with kids. All these sketches took around an hour and I still fondly remember the gusty wind (my first sketch has the place’s white sand caught on the paint), clear water and how I rushed to capture the sunset hues. Hope to record new places in paint in future trips too.

Sketched this about a month ago. Interesting to see a Brahma Shrine in front of this house here, which is very commonly seen in Thailand (I learnt they also have other similar “Spirit houses” ). The four-faced idol, Brahma is widely known in India as the “God of creator”.

Opening of “USK 10X10 + ASEAN 50 + We Draw ASEAN Together” exhibition at GCV Temasek Polytechnic yesterday, many thanks for the entire team. I’m glad that two of my sketches were selected to be a part of the exhibition.
Exhibition runs till July 8.

Later in the afternoon, I attended artist Ch’ng Kiah Kiean’s “Sketching with Ink and twig” workshop, it was very interesting to make our own sketching tools and KK guided us with his 2 wonderful demos during outdoor sketching.

The Sengkang Compass Point Mall had been closed for renovation for nearly a year and came back with a fresh look with a new name, Compass One. With more residents looking forward, the mall was re-opened in September 2016. Additional facilities are a wet playground for kids, Sengkang Public Library now occupying two levels, many new shops and eateries. The exterior design had a nautical themed design which I think has been down played in this look.

Sengkang west Zone D RC had arranged for a half-day leisure outing to St. John’s Island yesterday. Wonderfully organised by the team with games, competitions, gifts, lucky draw and snacks. I managed to sketch the activities while kids and hubby were enjoying the games

Here’s a detail from a sketch (in progress) I did yesterday…..among the two traffic cones, one has a change in tone from light into shadow (showing convincing turning of form) and the other has a single tone throughout (can’t see form and structure), this is why I think tones are very important. Reason for sketching this again in Gouache is, the construction materials have arrived in the nearby vacant land and I’m pretty sure this view will be gone forever. I have planned to sketch the progress in construction stages from the same view, it may take 2-3 years, but I’ll try to document the slow changes as seen through my window. Let’s see how it goes!!

Back from India with a couple of sketches……….a row of shops opposite to my house, in the middle is a typical south Indian petty shop. People gather here to have tea, coffee and discuss local village issues to international matters. This petty shop is owned by a “bhai”, we here commonly call all our Muslim friends “bhai”, meaning brother.

I usually block-in with a warm orange tone for all my sketches especially for the foliage, here I started sketching the focal point first and as I moved on either sides, felt the sketch was complete by then and decided not to make it too busy.

It was very interesting to sketch this unused door in the material storage place…but my motto was to show convincing light and shadow across the patch of grass.As often said, it is important to have a clear objective to sketch or paint a scene in technical/artistic terms that you wish to capture on the 2D surface, it can be like an interesting shape, convincing light, colors in shadow, temperature difference, depth in distance/atmosphere, turning of form etc. rather than just liking the scene/subject.

April Sketchwalk – Bukit Pasoh

Official sketchwalk for April was held at Bukit Pasoh yesterday in conjunction with Singapore Heritage festival organised by National heritage board and National Museum. Lovely architecture along the street with bright colours of the old as opposed to the neutral and grey hues of the present. Limited palette of mine with Cad yellow, Cad red and Cerulean Blue.

Tried to capture the dappled light on the shed, however could have used saturated color in there. I used a limited palette of Cad yellow, cad Red and Prussian blue……always remind myself to use more paint, should be bold with the values…..lot of things to learn, that’s what keeps me going

Void deck

A typical void deck in Singapore apartments, an open space in ground floor with benches, bicycle parking racks and tables, some apartments even have small shops. This is the front pick-up/drop area of our apartment void deck. Often those who live in the ground floor have the option of setting up a nice mini-garden like this. I sketched this from the pedestrian walk, the only difficulty being the big red ants from the mango trees.

Sengkang Park and Mushroom Cafe

We frequent Sengkang Riverside Park and Mushroom Cafe on Sunday afternoons and went last Sunday too. After lunch, kids and hubby headed to fly kites and I hopped from tree to tree to find a good shady spot for sketching. It was a nice windy day and my pigments were drying up fast. Spent about 1 1/2 hours sketching and this was the result,

I find Gouache becomes pale if I’m not very careful about the values, because it tends to lighten a bit after drying and a little white will kill the intensity of colours a lot (unlike oils where pigments retain considerable intensity after adding white). Did some corrections later at home.

Compass Point Mall, Sengkang – Before renovation

“Compass Point” mall in Sengkang is undergoing renovation currently and temporarily closed for about 1 year. People here miss the Public Library, Supermarket and other eateries. This is how it looks now, I always felt the architecture somehow resembles a cruise ship from the design of windows and layers. Realised how huge the mall is when I tried to sketch it from side view, however settled for this one, since other views are blocked by trees. Took 3 sessions of 1 hour each. Looking forward for the new look, I’ll sketch this again after the re-open.

January 2016 Sketchwalk – Chinatown

HAPPY LUNAR NEW YEAR TO ALL MY FRIENDS!!

With Lunar New Year commencing next week, the official Sketchwalk for January was organised at Chinatown…..the place is festive with people and lots of goodies, me and ritu went to sketch the Mariamman temple.

The temple has a banner in front with wishes for the coming Lunar new year and was bustling with people of all races and religion. When we finished sketching and about to move, the Lion Dancers reached the temple and were ready to start their performance.

Anyway we had to move on to watch Woon Lam Ng’s watercolor demo. He stressed on to have a good, strong structure first before building up on the details over. We couldn’t stay for the Show and Tell, rushed back home.

Morning walk and sketch

School holidays and I’m going walks with my kids around waterway……saw a couple of monitor lizards, Kingfishers and everyday I’m sketching 360 degree views from the same shady spot under the bridge….can’t go too far with kids and can’t spend more than 1 hour in sketch…..I find this an opportunity to learn sketching as many possible scenes around the same place. There is always room for improvement!

It was Hari Raya Puasa yesterday, we were in Changi Beach…….not so crowded there unlike all other public holidays, kids had a good time playing and I did two gouache sketches…..I have to windup this second sketch when I saw dark clouds over Pulau Ubin….. completed my sketch by adding foreground shadows at home today.

Official opening of “We Draw Singapore Together” exhibition by Temasek Polytechnic and USKSG

“We Draw Singapore Together” exhibition jointly organised by Temasek Polytechnic and USKSG is officially open now, the exhibit runs till 12th August in Glocal Connect Village, Temask Polytechnic.

Displayed are sketches of many styles and different medium….. not to mention, the subjects showcase the culture and places of Singapore. My two charcoal sketches are alongside many talented artists’, I’m humbled and honored to be a part of this project. Thanks for the organizers who made it possible for us, you made us feel very special.

“We Draw Singapore Together” – May Sketchwalk at Marina Bay

“We Draw Singapore Together” workshop cum sketchwalk event was organised by Temasek Polytechnic and Urban Sketchers Singapore…..I attended the workshop about Sketching People and had the opportunity to learn under Don Low and James Tan, both are artists, illustrators and Urban Sketchers. They had previously prepared notes and pictures on many related topics…….very insightful. I’m going to sketch people more often.

On the second day of workshop, I went for the mass sketchwalk at Marina Bay…..Ritu too was sketching with me in the hot and humid weather. Here are our results for the day,

Sketched this in 3 sessions of 45 mins each, this Methodist Church is besides my HDB block….it has nursery and kindergarten classes, my son studied here for the past three years. This place will be very busy during the school ending hours and of course on Sundays.

I tried sketching with Gouache for the first time, though the effects are not similar to oil painting in anyway, it can be very easy to handle this medium outdoors……..may be I’ll use this to do plein air studies for my future studio oil paintings

Tongkang LRT, Charcoal on paper………sketched this from the walkway connecting nearby HDB and carpark. The word “Tongkang” refers to a kind of boat, most of the places in and around Sengkang have been given water/marine related names.

St Anne’s Church (1963) – Charcoal Sketch on location

A Happy accident! I sketched my first session of St Anne’s Church on last Friday and kept my charcoal sketch on the table…..my 2 yr old little daughter has sprayed a fine mist of water with the spray bottle(we use it to water our tiny terrariums) and by the time I saw my sketch, it was dry to touch……and the resulting texture was so good, I completed my sketch preserving it.

Plein Air Jalan Kayu

Plein air oil painting of “Church of The Epiphany” in Jalan Kayu along Tampines Expressway. Many construction works are going on nearby, quite unsure of this very old architecture.

Sketched this nostalgic back alley in Jalan Kayu with spiral staircase, plants growing on them, air vents in houses…..on the left is a tree thriving on a large stone wall. It started raining while sketching, added colors at home later.

Did this one today at Jalan Kayu, an old two storey house tucked in between other newly renovated houses, with interesting antique lamps, cracks on the walls and fresh colorful blossoms in balcony, I see this as a tie between past and present.

The second is a watercolor sketch of an old building with unique shaped balconies, interesting sun-shade windows, some plants growing on the cracks and this building stands in the heart of Jalan Kayu with busy shops nearby.

Birdwatching Plein air

An 1 1/2 hour study ( on Saturday) in oil in the bird-watching spot of Sengkang Floating Wetland, can see lots of White Herons on the trees. They keep coming seasonally to the same place, usually a lot more than seen in the photo here.

Here is the plein air painting I did today, the sky is overcast, so the light is cool and no much sharp or crisp shadows.

This is how I carry my wet oil painting from location, I have a box A4 size file with a thick Styrofoam sheet attached one side, I paste my painting with tape at the sides on the Styrofoam and close the file, that’s it….can carry 2 canvas in one file by attaching second canvas on the other side cover.
