A Brahma shrine

Sketched this about a month ago. Interesting to see a Brahma Shrine in front of this house here, which is very commonly seen in Thailand (I learnt they also have other similar “Spirit houses” ). The four-faced idol, Brahma is widely known in India as the “God of creator”.

January 2016 Sketchwalk – Chinatown

HAPPY LUNAR NEW YEAR TO ALL MY FRIENDS!!

With Lunar New Year commencing next week, the official Sketchwalk for January was organised at Chinatown…..the place is festive with people and lots of goodies, me and ritu went to sketch the Mariamman temple.

The temple has a banner in front with wishes for the coming Lunar new year and was bustling with people of all races and religion. When we finished sketching and about to move, the Lion Dancers reached the temple and were ready to start their performance.

Anyway we had to move on to watch Woon Lam Ng’s watercolor demo. He stressed on to have a good, strong structure first before building up on the details over. We couldn’t stay for the Show and Tell, rushed back home.

February Sketchwalk

My sketch of Sri Sivan Temple, Geylang East Avenue 2 for the February Sketchwalk with Urban Sketchers Singapore……………Charcoal on paper.

I had to rush home, so couldn’t wait for the “Show and tell session” but met fellow sketchers near the temple, hope there are more sketches of the temple. This is my first time visit to this temple, the architecture is a mix of North and South Indian styles, very interesting to sketch the intricacies.

Sketch of Arulmigu Velmurugan Gnanamuneeswarar Temple, Sengkang East……..Charcoal on paper. We go there often and the sounds and smell of the place make my mind relaxed and peaceful. This is the front view, may be I should go again to sketch a different view. I now feel, I could have done the “Gopuram”(the monumental tower above the entrance) better.

Sketch of Puat Jit Buddhist Temple in Sengkang, Charcoal on paper, A4 size.

I did this sketch for 5 days, 1 hour per day. The architectural details are a treat to sketch with charcoal, especially the roof and the lion sculptures.
