Signalling Robot

Automated signalling man has been in operation since a few weeks in the nearby the construction site. The robot is dressed up quite convincingly to look like a traffic controller, everybody slows down to take a closer look. First time seeing like this.

Here’s a detail from a sketch (in progress) I did yesterday…..among the two traffic cones, one has a change in tone from light into shadow (showing convincing turning of form) and the other has a single tone throughout (can’t see form and structure), this is why I think tones are very important. Any other views on this?

Reason for sketching this again in Gouache is, the construction materials have arrived in the nearby vacant land and I’m pretty sure this view will be gone forever. I have planned to sketch the progress in construction stages from the same view, it may take 2-3 years, but I’ll try to document the slow changes as seen through my window. Let’s see how it goes!!

Back from India with a couple of sketches……….a row of shops opposite to my house, in the middle is a typical south Indian petty shop. People gather here to have tea, coffee and discuss local village issues to international matters. This petty shop is owned by a “bhai”, we here commonly call all our Muslim friends “bhai”, meaning brother.

I usually block-in with a warm orange tone for all my sketches especially for the foliage, here I started sketching the focal point first and as I moved on either sides, felt the sketch was complete by then and decided not to make it too busy.

The Door

It was very interesting to sketch this unused door in the material storage place…but my motto was to show convincing light and shadow across the patch of grass.As often said, it is important to have a clear objective to sketch or paint a scene in technical/artistic terms that you wish to capture on the 2D surface, it can be like an interesting shape, convincing light, colors in shadow, temperature difference, depth in distance/atmosphere, turning of form etc. rather than just liking the scene/subject.

Mother’s Day

I’m not a fan of the much commercialized celebration of “Days” like teacher’s day, mother’s day etc., instead I wud advise my students to make handmade cards or gifts if they want to gift their loved ones….but last week my son bought an artificial rose from his bookshop for me(with the extra money he had), he said everyone bought gifts for their mums too……and I shud admit, that moment of receiving a gift from those little hands is very exceptional, he later promised to give me a handmade card too
And what I did with it? as usual…………Gouache (Cad yellow, Cad Red, Alizarin Crimson, Cerulean blue).

April Sketchwalk – Bukit Pasoh

Official sketchwalk for April was held at Bukit Pasoh yesterday in conjunction with Singapore Heritage festival organised by National heritage board and National Museum. Lovely architecture along the street with bright colours of the old as opposed to the neutral and grey hues of the present. Limited palette of mine with Cad yellow, Cad red and Cerulean Blue.

Tried to capture the dappled light on the shed, however could have used saturated color in there. I used a limited palette of Cad yellow, cad Red and Prussian blue……always remind myself to use more paint, should be bold with the values…..lot of things to learn, that’s what keeps me going

Void deck

A typical void deck in Singapore apartments, an open space in ground floor with benches, bicycle parking racks and tables, some apartments even have small shops. This is the front pick-up/drop area of our apartment void deck. Often those who live in the ground floor have the option of setting up a nice mini-garden like this. I sketched this from the pedestrian walk, the only difficulty being the big red ants from the mango trees.

Sengkang Park and Mushroom Cafe

We frequent Sengkang Riverside Park and Mushroom Cafe on Sunday afternoons and went last Sunday too. After lunch, kids and hubby headed to fly kites and I hopped from tree to tree to find a good shady spot for sketching. It was a nice windy day and my pigments were drying up fast. Spent about 1 1/2 hours sketching and this was the result,

I find Gouache becomes pale if I’m not very careful about the values, because it tends to lighten a bit after drying and a little white will kill the intensity of colours a lot (unlike oils where pigments retain considerable intensity after adding white). Did some corrections later at home.

Compass Point Mall, Sengkang – Before renovation

“Compass Point” mall in Sengkang is undergoing renovation currently and temporarily closed for about 1 year. People here miss the Public Library, Supermarket and other eateries. This is how it looks now, I always felt the architecture somehow resembles a cruise ship from the design of windows and layers. Realised how huge the mall is when I tried to sketch it from side view, however settled for this one, since other views are blocked by trees. Took 3 sessions of 1 hour each. Looking forward for the new look, I’ll sketch this again after the re-open.

January 2016 Sketchwalk – Chinatown

HAPPY LUNAR NEW YEAR TO ALL MY FRIENDS!!

With Lunar New Year commencing next week, the official Sketchwalk for January was organised at Chinatown…..the place is festive with people and lots of goodies, me and ritu went to sketch the Mariamman temple.

The temple has a banner in front with wishes for the coming Lunar new year and was bustling with people of all races and religion. When we finished sketching and about to move, the Lion Dancers reached the temple and were ready to start their performance.

Anyway we had to move on to watch Woon Lam Ng’s watercolor demo. He stressed on to have a good, strong structure first before building up on the details over. We couldn’t stay for the Show and Tell, rushed back home.

Sengkang Hockey Stadium

Sengkang Hockey stadium is a part of Sengkang Sports and Recreation Centre, two important events have been held here in the past few years – Hockey tournament of 2010 Youth Olympic Games and SEA Games. I sketched this in two sessions, this was the result after 1 hour for the 1st day…

After going to the location the next day, realised I forgot to bring my brushes and water pail…….then came back home and sketched the remaining from photo.
