Bishan Park on-location panoramic sketch in gouache

On-location sketching of Bishan park landscape in gouache the next day, while walking across the stream and playing with water. We saw a heron occassionally feeding on the fish in the stream. It was a nice panoramic view from the other side.

Second day sketch in Bishan park with Schmincke Akademie Gouache, it started raining just when daughter and I found a good spot to sketch and set up things under a tree. We moved to a nearby shelter and I continued, trying to capture the dark, cold, rainy mood in my sketchbook.

SCHMINCKE Akademie Gouache paints are now available in town and I tried using them in my outdoor sketch and a small studio painting. I tested them on 300gsm Cold Pressed Watercolour paper. I selected Indian Yellow, Carmine, Ultramarine, Turquoise, Sap Green and Burnt Sienna.

The pigments are bright and fresh, when mixed with white they give beautiful tints. However the tints vary from semi-transparent to opaque depending on the binder to pigment ratio. That makes me to use more pigment for a good coverage. I felt the paint is more towards the acrylic side and is more suitable for layering washes and glazing.

The paints retained their buttery consistency and didn’t dry up even after 10 days when kept inside an air-tight contianer. Most of the pigments have been marked as high lightfast rating. There are 30 colours available in this Akdemie series including Gold and Silver colours, brilliant for illustrations and mixed media art. The paints come in 60ml tubes with a good variety of colours. The quality of the paint is good considering the price is much cheaper for more quantity.

Reflecting back on the sketching trip and I have lots going in my mind. A big thank you for the organisers of Asia-link Sketchwalk, USKSG family n my family

I always hoped to attend these events and finally made it this time. I’m glad that I manged on my own throughout (my family joined me later, they had their own plans and let me have my time to attend the happenings). Usually I would like to keep things to myself , but this time I pulled myself out of my circle and made many new friends. Realised that I couldn’t sketch away just like I would do in Singapore or India and I needed time to settle down, but did fairly well in sketching, I hope. Need to rethink about keeping the tools light and quick sketching ways!!

In total, I came out of my comfort zone in little good ways, already am looking forward for the next sketching event!!

We “Captured the mood in Gouache” during Saturday’s workshop. The participants were very keen to learn and appreciative of the medium. A memorable and learning experience for me as an instructor as I learnt to keep track of the time, lesson plan, my 45 mins demo and attending to the queries of the participants. Strangely, I forgot to bring my palette(but had pictures to show how my palette looks) and water container, thanks Jenny and Favian for helping me with supplies. I had the wonderful Meg HLeng to assist me. Thanks for all the participants, I’m glad to have contributed in someway for your urbansketching journey!

Missed #1week100people2019 challenge yesterday, so catching up during morning walk today. Each study took about 1 minute, I felt I have trouble with capturing gesture and proportions of ppl in action. Today I could sketch much faster. Also tried the minimalist outdoor sketching kit inspired by @bucciblog Marco Bucci. Made my version with an A5 size file case, it is lightweight and hope it helps me to do quick sketches. Done on #theperfectsketchbook using watercolors + white gouache

Recently the Punggolpark has seen many good changes, great to he back there yesterday morning. The park was packed with joggers and exercisers untill around 11:30am.
