Star Anise geometry design for National Museum of Sg Rangoli

This year’s theme for Deepavali celebration at National Museum of Singapore is ‘Spices’ and I had a request that I use the Spices from National Museum’s William Farquhar collection of paintings. I suggested to use the spices for the decoration and incorporated the natural Geometric Shape of the spice ‘Star Anise’ into the design and this was well received as this fits into the overall theme as well.

Though I was a little sceptical about myself giving a talk about ‘Rangoli & it’s significance’ live on facebook from the museum, I pushed myself as always. I’m glad the talk went on well, thankfully my co-hosts Mehak from India and Michelle from Croatia were very interested in the art and that helped me to discuss about some of the facts about Rangoli in a very casual way throughout 1 hour. later Michelle stayed with me until the end of the programme, interacting with the kids and parents who came to try their hands on the rangoli.

I’m very happy to learn that National Museum of Singapore received positive feedback about the program and they have decided to keep the Rangoli for 1 week until deepavali, for the visitors. Kindly visit level 2 to see the Art of Rangoli with a ‘Spice theme’. I’m thankful to the programme Co-ordiantor from National Museum of Sg, the camera crew, Marinah, my co-hosts, visitors whom I met last Saturday and all others who appreciate my work!

Had a wonderful Deepavali at National Gallery, the reason being I got an opportunity to transform an intricate idea into a simplified visual reality. This custom designed mosaic Rangoli was conceptualised and designed to entertain the kiddie visitors, of course it was delightful to see my design coming to life in the little hands. It was indeed very well received !!

Happy to be a part of the Pongal festival celebration at Cheng San Community Club with respected Prime Minister of Singapore as the Guest of Honour……many kids and adults of other races enjoyed looking at the Rangoli, all eager to learn about this thanksgiving (to Sun and the cattle) harvest festival. I included as many elements as I could within the allotted time of 1 hour.

Rangoli for a corporate Deepavali event at Bedok……with a 3 1/2 feet “Kutthuvilakku” and decorative Diyas. I decorated the transparent sheet Rangoli with Kundan stones and Gold liner, since my client specifically requested for rich colours, I attached a white background to enhance the brightness of the colours.

Handcrafted framed Rangoli

Tampines Town Council recently placed an order for 5 unique handmade sets of Rangoli……. a special privilege is that these custom made sets are going to be signed by 5 of our Honorable Members of Parliament!!

Usually done on floor, Rangolis are designs composed of geometric patterns and shapes, together with rich colours. There are numerous possibilities in pattern and colours by rearranging the geometric shapes and I am always awestruck by seeing these designs and colours in Nature as florals, snowflakes, skin patterns of creatures on land and sea…so on.

Since the order here is to be framed, I had to go for a different medium than usual. I made these a little more special, the users can change the background for a different look……needless to say, I had fun and joy in creating these sets during this festive season. A sneak peek of the designs here……..

A glimpse of me and my Rangoli in Pasir Ris-Punggol Town Council Newsletter (Issue 44 Jan-March 2015)……..I thoroughly enjoyed creating this “SG 50 & Pongal” themed Rangoli single handedly 2 hours non-stop, during the “Pongalo Pongal” event organised by Sengkang Iaec.

I still gladly remember how the kids got fascinated by seeing the multi-colourd Merlion and people seeking permission to take pictures of the work.

Thank you Pasir Ris-Punggol Town Council members and staff for the picture!
