Here are some sketches I did last week, when we were in Borocay, Philippines for school holidays. This is the first time where I managed to squeeze in some comfort sketching time for myself when kids n hubby were busy playing. It’s not always easy to sit and sketch in a new place where we do have a lot of things to see and enjoy, especially with kids. All these sketches took around an hour and I still fondly remember the gusty wind (my first sketch has the place’s white sand caught on the paint), clear water and how I rushed to capture the sunset hues. Hope to record new places in paint in future trips too.

Sengkang west Zone D RC had arranged for a half-day leisure outing to St. John’s Island yesterday. Wonderfully organised by the team with games, competitions, gifts, lucky draw and snacks. I managed to sketch the activities while kids and hubby were enjoying the games

Still experimenting with tools……Sketching with pen/pencil minimises my sketching gear weight and eases the process especially on family outings.

Reason for sketching this again in Gouache is, the construction materials have arrived in the nearby vacant land and I’m pretty sure this view will be gone forever. I have planned to sketch the progress in construction stages from the same view, it may take 2-3 years, but I’ll try to document the slow changes as seen through my window. Let’s see how it goes!!

Sengkang Park and Mushroom Cafe

We frequent Sengkang Riverside Park and Mushroom Cafe on Sunday afternoons and went last Sunday too. After lunch, kids and hubby headed to fly kites and I hopped from tree to tree to find a good shady spot for sketching. It was a nice windy day and my pigments were drying up fast. Spent about 1 1/2 hours sketching and this was the result,

I find Gouache becomes pale if I’m not very careful about the values, because it tends to lighten a bit after drying and a little white will kill the intensity of colours a lot (unlike oils where pigments retain considerable intensity after adding white). Did some corrections later at home.

Morning walk and sketch

School holidays and I’m going walks with my kids around waterway……saw a couple of monitor lizards, Kingfishers and everyday I’m sketching 360 degree views from the same shady spot under the bridge….can’t go too far with kids and can’t spend more than 1 hour in sketch…..I find this an opportunity to learn sketching as many possible scenes around the same place. There is always room for improvement!

“Go Green”

These group of latest paintings are inspired by the theme “Go Green”, I’ve tried to capture the light on landscapes true to Singapore. The paintings are done with a limited palette of three primaries plus white. I used either warm/cool version of each.

It is very pleasing to watch the sun glittering through the leaves in early or late hours, especially the fluorescent colors of the leaves at the moment. The leaves are filtering the bright light through them to manipulate that color.

“Into the Light” painting is done entirely with palette knife, brushes are used only for blending in some areas. For most of the recent paintings I’ve used palette knife extensively, prefer particularly for landscapes.

Time and tide wait for none, but time here stands still for you to enjoy the lively. The tranquil water mesmerizes everyone, evokes a quiet mood to indulge within.

This painting is really after a long gap, however I used the time to learn from other artists. A scene from my neighborhood waterway, I’m striving to capture the essence of the place while still maintaining the color harmony, correct values and color temperature. There should be at least one improvement than every previous work for me to believe I’m in the correct phase of learning.

The Serangoon river running along the Sengkang East is a habitat for a variety of birds. Herons and kingfishers are common to see along the riverbanks, hence the area is known to be one of the best bird-watching spots in Singapore. This is the close view of riverbank of Sungei Serangoon (Serangoon river) from the jogging track.

A Serene Heritage Trail

This is a painting of Bukit Timah Railway Station, that recently became an important heritage trail of Singapore.

Situated in a serene atmosphere, the Bukit Timah Railway Station is an endearing local landmark and a key building of Singapore’s railway history. The Bukit Timah Railway Station was opened as a part of the Singapore-Kranji Railway. Owned by the Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB), these railway tracks and train stations were properties of the Malaysian Government until June 30, 2011. Going there after the train service ceased, everyone including me had a nostalgic feel and people were discussing about changing tracks, signalling, exchange of keys they haven’t experienced before. This must be the reason why I wanted to paint this place. Its conservation serves as a physical reminder of Singapore’s role as a transport hub in the region.

Water has always been very fascinating to paint for me, particularly the reflections. But in this painting, I’ve attempted to capture the shining, shimmering effect of light falling on water. Another challenge was to get the correct perspective to depict the vastness of the water as if stretches to a long distance from the viewer towards the distant mountains and the perspective here has to be achieved with receding water drops only. Hope I managed to do that. Comments are welcome!

With analogous color scheme for this painting I could get more control over the values and get the shining water drops.
