This is the most awaited artwork students want to do, “Merlion”, the very famous symbol of Singapore……..I made kids to practice the drawing many times, now they know the easy method to draw this icon.

We used both blending and scratch-out in making of this painting. Look how the Merlion stands majestically in the crack of dawn.

Water is a very versatile compositional element that gives a lively feel if added to any landscape, we had lessons on how to paint water………and I explained my students how they can get the realistic representation of water by painting one of it’s very important and fascinating property “reflection”.

Here’ the first lesson and it got easy with the watercolour’s wet on wet technique……drawing the reflected image is of course a bit challenging for them.

Kids Art @myartsandcreatives 2014 – Colour Wheel

Making a colour wheel with only 3 primary colours and mixing secondary colours is the basic idea of this lesson….kids also learned about warm and cool colours and how to use them in paintings.

Additionally we painted a simple landscape with both warm and cool colours, so that kids could understand the effect they give….one looked like a warm sunrise landscape and the other like a cool night/evening landscape.

This is the second lesson in the tree series, when learning to paint a palm kids also learnt to do a beach landscape. I have to constantly remind them retain the happy accidents in the sky and water to interpret as clouds and waves, otherwise they would be keen to make their art “clean” with another stroke of paint over!

We did a couple of wet on wet landscapes again, simple and straightforward compositions to make students understand the concept well. I like to make them practice many pieces instead of doing one finished artwork, so that kids get a complete glimpse of the method, of course I insist them to repeat the concepts again as homework with their own creativity.

And often the simple compositions will convey a clear, strong message than a detailed rendering, at least in my opinion!

The final episode of the Drawing module is “RAINFOREST”, you can see the details about this project here and the up close pics here.

The second module is all about Watercolours………the Introduction class is about how to handle the brush, how to control the water and pigment ratio and practicing some important brush strokes.

Then the second class started off with two watercolour landscapes……I thought it is very important to teach kids about the strong power of simplicity, suggest with simple but effective techniques………..look at the various soft edges of the sky that add to realistic forms of clouds….if they had done these landscapes in the same way before knowing the technique, sure the sky would not have been very soft and subtle as these……..here the sky is the supporting element of these two landscapes!

After birds, I started with animal drawings…….thought it would be easy for my students to go with farm animals first. As usual I came up with a “Farm scene” project, it was going to be like a landscape with a Barn and a windmill. As students need to be taught of “perspective”, this project was challenging. It took a while for them to understand why they are drawing the barn at the top and a horizon line as such, but upon completion they got more clear of the scene. Needless to say, they were very happy about this project.

We could see the drawing skills getting better and better by this project. I used Poster colors for coloring this scene.

Techniques: Drawing,
Coloring with poster colors,
Sponge painting for grass,
Masking with tapes,
Finger painting.

Kids Art @myartsandcreatives 2014 – “Birds”

“Birds” is a very fascinating subject for kids, because they can play with many colors…….I planned to co-ordinate all my subjects into a single theme “My Bird Park” and so the size of our project is A3, first time kids are going to play with this size!

I selected the familiar and most famous birds for the project, keeping in mind the techniques too…..we finished one/two subjects completely before moving on to the next one, the whole sheet was getting covered with fabulous creations……..later we finished with the background and the theme title!

Techniques: Drawing Birds,

Kids Art @myartsandcreatives 2014 – “Aqua series”

The “Aqua series” started with drawing concept as usual and then we used the medium “oil pastels” for the colors. The best thing with oil pastels is that students can play with blending and scratch-out-details which are not best with crayons. Layering can also be done successfully in this medium.

As oil pastels and watercolors don’t mix, doing the background with watercolor is easy and students can paint the background literally over the subjects. Again I gave them a tips for painting a smooth, real under water resembling background!

“Reptiles” is a great way to incorporate most of the fun textures because they naturally have lots of unique textures on their skin…..as usual, initially students would draw their subjects and then we did a combined reptile project……..I made sure to use many easy techniques!

By the end of this section, students got good hold of my main concept in drawing….everybody could draw well by then. Can see the recognizable subjects!!

Techniques: Basic Drawing,
Plastic Wrap texture,
Crayon Resist watercolor,
Crayon rub textures.

Drawing Dinos was the second sub-module, students had so much fun drawing the dinosaurs and adding embelishments!
After basic drawing classes, kids were encouraged to do a framed art using salt sprinkled on watercolor, the textures were just appropriate for the Dinos.

Back to the Introduction class of Kids art 2014!

I started the first class with shapes, students are encouraged to draw any structure/drawing using one or a combination of them…….building with shapes is very important and a very basic knowledge that helps kids to identify the basic shape of any subject and then developing it into further structures.

Kids explored each and every shape to form a variety of subjects, most of them built a house!

Technique: Building with shapes,
Coloring with crepe paper.

A peep into the “Rainforest”, exciting to see how much “life and character” the kids breathed into their animal drawings……..we even added forest vines!

Students enjoyed looking at the nice leaf-alike effects that the sprinkled salt made with the colors, they took turns to see the gradually developing textures!

I’ve to explain what I’m doing(!) with my art classes bcoz parents deserve it(yesss, otherwise they’ll call me crazy(?) and also this is a Shameless Self Promotion before anyone claims these as their works, yes it happens!) haha…..

In the current kids art class 2014, the first module is dedicated to drawing. We did many projects and my prime motive for the drawing module is:

* To make drawing more interesting,
* To generalize the drawing steps to a certain extent (although all subjects cannot be drawn with the same steps)
* To exaggerate the specialty/uniqueness in each subject,
* To combine similar subjects to form a meaningful theme project,
* To use many fun techniques/effects in the projects,
* To use different medium for every project.

Having said these, I impose myself a set of these not-to-overcome rules!!

Our previous projects are about Dinos, Reptiles, Aquatic series, Birds, Farm Animals(more about them later).

The project we just finished is “Rainforest” about Wild animals. I designed this concept again with all the above “rules”, but decided it should be grand and different from the previous ones. I made a lot of trial and errors as this involves 20+ students of all age groups, initially I’m a little reluctant bcoz I knew I had to cut 250+ drawings…..but decided to give it a go as the kids will enjoy this one as much as me!

This one as expected turned out fantastic, I’m very satisfied to see the happy kids showing their works to their happy parents!!

Concept: Wild Animals in 3D Rainforest
Medium: Liquid watercolors,
Techniques learnt: Painting with 2 or more colors,
Salt effects on Watercolor,
Drawing & Painting background for forest.
